Abstract

In this paper, relationship between sounds and communities is discussed. First, some of the studies on relationship between sounds and communities are reviewed. These studies can be divided into two types. One type is the supporter of the concept of ``acoustic community'' proposed by R. Murray Schafer: actual communities can be re-defined using sounds. The other is the idea that a group whose members share a certain sound in their ways is regarded as a kind of community. And the latter idea includes the former. Then, the concept of ``Acoustic Community'', which is derived from the review, is proposed. ``Acoustic Community'' is defined as ``a group whose member share a certain sound in their ways.'' ``Acoustic Community'' can be defined from two points of views: individual level and mass level. These definitions are compatible with each other. And effectiveness of this concept to grasp structures of noise problem is shown.
